Hardly a day goes by where I don’t receive some kind of forwarded fairytale!

Next time you’re about to hit “Forward:”, think about checking one of the sites below before ridiculing the sender (nicely) in the hope of stemming the tide of email garbage sent by our friends and colleagues:

An ideal way to gently mock the sender would be to send them to the following clip:

Windows Task Manager Button/Tabs/Menu Disappeared?!

2007
08.20

Are you missing any of the following from your your Windows XP/2000/? Task Manager?

  1.  Blue title bar at the top of the window
  2. Menu bar at top of the window under the blue bar
  3. Tabs for switching Application/Processes/Performance/Networking/Users

In most cases, here is your solution…

Double click the top of the window… ie the grey area just above “Image Name | User Name | CPU | Mem Usage” – the menu/tabs etc should now reappear.

To hide them again, double click in the grey area to the left or right of the tabs…

Google adds StarOffice to its free software pack

2007
08.14

Not content with taking on Microsoft Office with its online Docs and Spreadsheet service, Google has now included StarOffice in its free download suite. StarOffice is, curiously, the paid-for cousin of the open-source OpenOffice, which has been selling for around $70 on Sun’s website. StarOffice includes extra features, fonts and templates over OpenOffice. Sun also offers customers three free support calls during the first 60 days of ownership.“Google Pack includes a free, non-expiring version of StarOffice 8 that includes all the major functionality of the paid consumer version, except for the Adabas D database,” says a Google spokesperson. “We believe that users will benefit from access to a free, full-featured office suite for the desktop.”

Whether Google’s support will be enough to push StarOffice into the mainstream is debatable. The software has long been available for free download, but still resides firmly in the shadow of Microsoft’s offering.

However, it poses yet another problem for Microsoft, which is struggling to match Google’s vast range of popular online services.
