Wireless Keyboards hacked… people can log what you’re typing without you knowing!

2007

A large number of Logitech and Microsoft keyboards are confirmed as being easily accessed – ie that a person with the right software tools can begin logging EVERYTHING you type or press on your keyboard… without any interaction from you. Within a couple of minutes, the unscrupulous co-worker could be logging every keypress you make…

Sk0t, an ex-administrator of the EliteTorrents BitTorrent tracker is to have his internet connection forcibly monitored by the US Government. If that wasn’t bad enough, the monitoring software is Windows based – which means he is being forced to ditch GNU/Linux – or face being barred from the internet.

iPhone FREE Unlock Unlocking Solution + download URL + mirrors + source code!

2007
09.12

On the evening of 11th September 2007, the FREE SOFTWARE-ONLY iPhone unlock solution was released. This allows unlocking of your 4gb or 8gb iPhone from the comfort of your home… most importantly for $0/£0/€0!

This software is not yet released in a form that can be used by the average person… but the unlock has been done, the claim verified, and the information released!

You can grab the file right now at one of these locations – although unless you know what you’re doing, you’re unlikely to be able to use it! An easy one-click installer will probably be released sometime soon.

Dirty Orange Tactics – 50% increase classifies as “small change to terms”?

2007
09.11

On 9th September 2007 I noticed a text message from Orange on a rarely used Orange prepay phone I own… it said something along the lines of:

“We are making a small change to the terms & conditions on your account. Please call 452 option 4 or see www.orange.co.uk/termschange”

Now most people would probably ignore this and think it was something insignificant or maybe intend to check the information later…

I eventually got around to checking, out of curiosity, and it transpires that this small change is:

”from 1 October 2007 the cost per minute of calling your Answer Phone and our minimum call charge will change from 10p to 15p.”

This is clearly a “stealth” increase to squeeze a few extra pounds out of unsuspecting customers :’(

My thoughts are:

1) bearing in mind that almost every mobile user will access their voicemail at some point…why do Orange classify a 50% increase in cost of calling the answerphone as being a “small change in terms”

2) as many prepay calls are likely to be short (eg under 1 minute)… how can Orange consider a 50% increase in minimum call cost to be a “small change in terms”

3) this charge appears to pure profiteering as there is no explanation given that might explain the increase

4) the greatest cost increase (50% on ) is to those who use their phone the least

5) most prepay customers are trying to keep tight control of their call-spend and so should be informed fully and directly of any price rise (let alone a 50% one!)

6) IF Orange are not trying to hide the information from customers then why send a text referring the customer to an info line (452) or the Orange website…. when the actual changes (ie price hike) would have fitted in the original text message. Even if it did not fit, i’m sure Orange could afford the approximately ZERO pence it costs a network operator to send a same-network text to their own customers…

THE iPhone HAS BEEN TRADED [for a Nissan 350Z & 3 more iPhones!]

Quoting George Hotz (aka Geohot):

Terry Daidone, the founder of Certicell contacted me this morning, and offered to make a trade for the iPhone [the first unit in the world to be physically unlocked]. I traded it for a sweet Nissan 350Z and 3 8GB iPhones. I will be sending the iPhones, unlocked if they wish, to jpetrie (the first donater), gray(the reversing genius), and iProof(who is truly amazing at finding stuff online) Thanks a lot everyone. I leave for college tomorrow, and this has been a great end to a great summer. If I ever do anything more with the iPhone, it’ll definitely be posted here…
